He is best known for his 1984 album Purple Rain and the accompanying film. Prince also performed with his band, the Revolution, delivering energetic and unforgettable live shows. Prince incorporated elements of funk, rock, pop, and R&B, creating a sound that was entirely his own. One key aspect of his innovation was his use of synthesizers and drum machines, which gave his music a distinct, futuristic sound.
Prince (born June 7, 1958, Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.—died April 21, 2016, Chanhassen, Minnesota) was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, producer, dancer, and performer on keyboards, drums, and bass who was among the most talented musicians of his generation. Like Stevie Wonder, he was a rare composer who could perform at a professional level on virtually all the instruments he required, and a considerable number of his recordings feature him in all the performing roles. Prince’s recording career began with funk and soul marketed to a Black audience; his early music also reflected the contemporary musical impact of disco. His later records incorporated a vast array of influences, including jazz, punk, heavy metal, the Beatles, and hip-hop, usually within an overall approach most informed by funky up-tempo styles and soulful ballads; the latter often featured his expressive falsetto singing.
Free of any further contractual obligations to Warner Bros., Prince attempted a major comeback later that year with the release of Emancipation, a 36-song, three-CD set (each disc was exactly 60 minutes long). The album was released via his own NPG Records with distribution through EMI. To publish his songs on Emancipation, Prince did not use Controversy Music – ASCAP, which he had used for all his records since 1981, but rather used Emancipated Music Inc.[142] – ASCAP.
Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts.[17][18] In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 18, soon releasing the studio albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). In 1984, Prince became the first singer to simultaneously have a number-one film, album and single in the US, with the film Purple Rain, its soundtrack, and his first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping single "When Doves Cry", which later ranked as the biggest hit of the year.
Those first out-of-town concerts were well-received, and the band was soon enlisted to open for funk superstar Rick James on a three-month tour, giving Prince the opportunity to win over new fans from coast to coast in the spring of 1980. Almost two weeks after the musician's death, a lawyer revealed that Dr. Howard Kornfeld, a California-based physician who specializes in treatment for those dependent upon and addicted to pain medication, had been called upon by Prince's team to aid the musician. (The performer had undergone hip surgery some years earlier, and was believed to have endured recurring discomfort while giving concerts.) Kornfeld's son had reportedly flown to Prince's compound to initiate the recovery process and was among those who found him dead. While Prince's state of health at the time of his death is unknown, attorney William Mauzy said the artist "was dealing with a grave medical emergency" when Kornfeld was called, as reported by The Minneapolis Star Tribune. On April 21, 2016, Prince was found dead at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota. The week prior, his plane made an emergency landing and the singer was hospitalized for what was purportedly a severe case of the flu, though reports later stated that the musician was actually given a life-saving "safe shot" for a Percocet overdose.

He railed against the idea of providing his songs to online music platforms without proper upfront compensation and profit-sharing, with his tracks eventually only found on the Jay-Z backed streaming service Tidal. One of the few pop artists to have full ownership of his masters, he was diligent via Web Sheriff in erasing examples of his music, including videos and live performances, from the internet. He was thus behind the Lenz v. Universal Musical Group case, which unsuccessfully pushed for the YouTube removal of a baby dancing to "Let's Go Crazy."

Prince later joked that the song "bought me a house"- but he reclaimed it as his own, performing it on every tour from the mid-90s onwards. He starred as a gigolo in 1986's Under the Cherry Moon, wooing Kristen Scott Thomas in the South of France, but the film floundered; while 1990's Graffiti Bridge - a sequel to Purple Rain - was nominated for five Golden Raspberries. This section lists albums that have only been made available for download on the internet. New photographs of Minneapolis landmarks were taken by Sarah White for The Prince Estate. Bobby remembers being blown away by Prince’s proficiency in the studio, and watching him go from instrument to instrument to lay down every aspect of the track. The first iteration consisted of Prince, André Anderson, and Prince’s cousin, Charles "Chazz" Smith.

How and when did Prince die?

Barely seven months passed between the release of his debut album, For You, and the beginning of the recording sessions for his follow-up, the self-titled Prince, and it was clear that both Prince and Warner Bros. were eager to quickly follow up his debut album with new work. Prince's estate has also signed a $30m deal with Universal Music to release non-Warner Bros material - which will hopefully include fan favourites like Extraloveable, Wonderful Ass, Lisa, Train, Rebirth of the Flesh and Big Tall Wall. "There were a couple of summer nights where we could hear music coming through the woods," Juli Gempler, who lived next door, told ABC News, external after his death. Since his death, however, fans have been afforded the occasional glimpse into his life - some funny, some enlightening, all of them elevating his status as a visionary, and a musical genius. After several years of relative obscurity, Prince returned to the limelight in 2004 to perform at the Grammy Awards with Beyoncé Knowles, the same year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That spring, he released Musicology with a tour that became the top concert draw in the United States.
